In a Spanish village in the Andalusian region, the wealthiest woman in the community, Bernarda Alba, loses her husband and enters the eight-year period of mourning, required by the local tradition, which she strictly respects. The house thus becomes a prison of silence for Bernarda, for her five daughters, who are in the prime of life, for Bernarda’s mother, for the governess and the maid. Following Bernarda’s tyrannical decisions, the women will live behind walls and drawn shutters. They will only go out to go to church, covered by black veils. Subject to ruthless conventions, the young girls live a state of perpetual unfulfillment and inner unrest, in which repressed desires, resentments, frustration and even hatred accumulate against their own mother and all those who enjoy freedom. The most handsome young man in the village, Pepe Romano, asks the eldest daughter, Angustias, to marry him and receives permission to speak to her in the evening, in front of the window bars. However, on this occasion, he also meets Adela, the youngest of the family, beautiful, vital, full of enthusiasm. Pursued by the maid and the jealous sisters, Adela, hopelessly in love with this young man, sees her secret revealed to the accusing family, the sisters coming to hate each other in the fight for the only man they interact with. Bernarda will opt for a radical solution, generating serious consequences.

Choreographer Mălina Andrei presents the show as a drama about deprivation of freedom, about the imposition of absurd rules, which lead to the eradication of love. Her intention was to bring to the stage of the theater in Târgoviște a part of the fascinating personality of Federico García Lorca – Spanish playwright, poet, pianist. The theater-dance show “The House of Bernarda Alba” is about emotion, passion, blood. At the same time, Mălina Andrei confesses that she was happy to work with most of the actresses from the “Tony Bulandra” Theater, precisely because they are very strong personalities.
